TORONTO - The final score was 4-1 for Toronto but there were several different twists to the storyline before the Maple Leafs put the Calgary Flames away with two empty-net goals Tuesday night.Leading 1-0 after the first, Toronto went into overdrive in a second period that saw it build its lead to 2-0 while outshooting the Flames 13-4.Calgary woke up in the third period — its 39 goals and plus-23 differential in the third led the league going into the game — and cut the margin to 2-1 less than four minutes in. The Flames outshot the Leafs 16-8 in the period, mounting a comeback that finally faltered with Jonas Hiller out for the extra attacker.Through it all, Jonathan Bernier held firm in the Toronto goal with 32 saves.Bernier came up with big saves at the right time, Calgary coach Bob Hartley said. We knew what to expect because hes been real hot in the last past games.I thought we played a decent first period, a great third period. But on the road against a team that is playing really well you need a full 60-minute effort. Our second period wasnt good enough, said Flames forward Matt Stajan.Toronto coach Randy Carlyle understandably had a different view of the timeline. The second period was probably one of the best periods weve played this year, he said. But it didnt stick. Carlyle said his team sat back in the third, stopped hitting and had to chase the action.James van Riemsdyk scored the winner early in the second period, traditionally a fertile time for the Leafs. Toronto came into the game with a league-leading 39 goals in the second.Peter Holland opened the scoring for Toronto, which got empty-net goals from Phil Kessel and Mike Santorelli. The Maple Leafs, who are now 12-0-0 when scoring first, wrapped up a five-game homestand at 4-1-0 before 19,122 at the Air Canada Centre.Markus Granlund scored for the Flames, who played well in the first period but trailed 2-0 going into the third.Calgary, which came into the game 9-0-1 after a loss, outshot Toronto 33-29.The Leafs (15-9-3) are now 6-1-1 since a pair of lopsided losses to Buffalo and Nashville.Asked if the 9-2 Nashville loss on Nov. 18 was a turning point, Carlyle said: I knew it couldnt get much worse. It was bad.You get thumped 9-2 at home, its not a lot of fun. I dont care what market youre in.The Flames (17-10-2) were coming off a 3-2 loss to San Jose that snapped a four-game win streak.Toronto got a sharp outing from Bernier in his career-high ninth straight start and 11th in 12 games. Bernier, who made 44 saves in Saturdays win over Vancouver, came into the game with a 3-1-0 career mark against Calgary with a 1.75 goals-against average and .944 save percentage.A goal-saving stop by Bernier on Johnny Gaudreau in close midway through the first period turned into a goal at the other end when, on the ensuing rush, Joffrey Lupul beat a defender down the boards and sent the puck over to the net. David Clarksons rebound went to Holland, who stuffed it in at 10:46 for his seventh of the season and second in as many games. For the 26-year-old goalie, it was a welcome good night at the office. The soft-spoken Bernier made headlines after a recent Toronto Raptors event marking the first anniversary of the death of Nelson Mandela when, appearing somewhat confused, he referred to the former South African president and human rights crusader as an tremendous athlete.Bernier apologized later, saying he had got nervous and mixed up on the red carpet. He was back in his element Tuesday.Im feeling pretty confident, pretty comfortable out there, he said. I think we have some pretty good chemistry with my D (defence) as well.Carlyle said the Leafs have to be careful not to overplay Bernier, but that the recent schedule has allowed the goalie to have the proper rest between games. James Reimer may finally get to play Wednesday in Detroit.Hiller, who had lost all four previous starts against the Leafs, was in the Flames goal after five consecutive starts by Karri Ramo. The Leafs made it 2-0 on the power play at 2:51 of the second, after a heads-up play by Nazem Kadri. Rather than shooting himself from the face-off dot, the Toronto centre slid a perfect pass over to van Riemsdyk, who redirected the puck past Hiller from in front for his 11th of the season.Dion Phaneuf got an assist on the play, the ex-Flames first career point against Calgary in seven games.Toronto outshot Calgary 6-0 in the first 8 1/2 minutes of the second period and were outshooting the visitors 11-1 some 11 minutes into the period. The Leafs got sloppy as the second ended, with one sequence having two Toronto players without sticks after Stephane Robidas lost his and fumbled a stick handover from Clarkson.Kessel showed great skill early in the third, knocking down a high pass from behind him and then flicking it to linemate Tyler Bozak whose shot was stopped by Hiller. The Swiss goalie then stopped Clarkson on a rush.A penalty for too many men on the ice then cost the Leafs as Granlund beat his man and tucked a fine pass from Mark Giordano past Bernier to cut the lead to 2-1 at 3:48. It was his fourth goal of the season.Follow @NeilMDavidson on Twitter nike vapormax ανδρικα . -- With his team down 16 points in the second quarter and headed for another blowout loss at home, Golden State Warriors coach Mark Jackson yelled out to his players to keep shooting and keep fighting on defence. nike vapormax greece .Pete Morelli said the back judge threw a flag on Cowboys linebacker Anthony Hitchens on a pass to Lions tight end Brandon Pettigrew in Dallas 24-20 wild-card win Sunday. You can watch all the action on TSN beginning at 8:45pm et/5:45pm pt. Arizona, which is now 51-27 officially in this event over the years and won it all in 1997 under Lute Olson, made it through the second and third rounds of the 76th NCAA Tournament with victories over Weber State (68-59) and Gonzaga (70-64) before going up against San Diego State in the round of 16 on Thursday night. The teams had met earlier this season, with the Wildcats pulling off a 69-60 win on the road, but this time around the Aztecs had a considerable fan base making the trip to Anaheim to support SDSU and while early on the local favorites appeared to be well on their way to advancing, Arizona came storming back in the second half to secure the 70-64 victory. Meanwhile the Badgers, winners of this tourney back in 1941 with a 39-34 decision against Washington State in Kansas City, Missouri, now have a mark of 28-18 in the event all-time. The second-round matchup with American was anything but a challenge, as Wisconsin breezed to a 75-35 win, but in the third round Oregon refused to go away quietly before suffering the 85-77 setback. Two nights ago, a powerful Baylor squad was brought to its knees as Wisconsin served up a 69-52 victory in order to advance to the Elite Eight yet again. In terms of an all-time series between these two programs, the Badgers cling to a 3-2 advantage thanks to three wins in four chances on a neutral floor. However, when it comes to competing against each other in the NCAA Tournament, the squads have split a pair of meetings. Back in 2000, they clashed in Salt Lake City during the postseason, with Wisconsin capturing a 66-59 win, while six years later it was Arizona with a massive 94-65 decision on St. Patricks Day in Philadelphia. The survivor in this regional final is headed to the Lone Star State next weekend where it will contend with the team representing the Midwest Regional (Kentucky/Michigan) next Saturday. It was a lows-scoring first half on both sides when Wisconsin hit the floor against the Bears Thursday, but Baylor looked particularly awful as it shot a mere 5-of-25 from the floor and 1-of-6 behind the 3-point line through the first 20 minutes of action. It was one of the worst performances before intermmission this season for the Bears and while they did improve in the second half, to 40.dddddddddddd6 percent from the field, they were just 1-of-9 out on the perimeter. Frank Kaminsky played a major role at both ends of the floor as he not only tallied a game-high 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting, but he also recorded all six of his teams blocked shots as well. Ben Brust checked in with 14 points and Nigel Hayes tallied 10 to go with six boards in only 18 minutes off the bench for a group that shot a disappointing 11-of-20 at the free-throw line. Kaminsky is far from a glamorous, household name, but for the Badgers he has become an essential piece of the puzzle in the paint, from scoring 13.7 ppg and clearing 6.2 rpg, to posting 64 blocked shots, just over half the teams total (124). Brust (13.0 ppg), Sam Dekker (12.5 ppg), Traevon Jackson (10.7 ppg) and Josh Gasser (9.1 ppg), all of whom have started every game this season, have put forth a strong effort at the defensive end as well where opponents have been limited to just 63.8 ppg. The 2013-14 Pac-12 Player of the Year was invisible for the first 37 minutes of the game against San Diego State, missing his first 10 field goal attempts, although he did have a mid-court prayer answered at the end of the first half that was waved off because it was released after the buzzer. However, in the final 2:45 Nick Johnson came alive with all 15 of his points in the win against the Aztecs, converting all 10 of his free throws and finishing with eight rebounds. Rondae Hollis-Jefferson and Aaron Gordon both tallied 15 points as well for the Wildcats, followed by T.J. McConnell who dropped in 11 points as the team held SDSU to just 38.9 percent shooting from the field and 4-of-14 behind the 3-point line. Despite the rough start on Thursday, Johnson still closed in on his season scoring average of 16.3 ppg and doubled his efforts on the glass, which now stands at 4.1 rpg. Gordon (12.5 ppg, 7.7 rpg) and Kaleb Tarczewski (9.9 ppg, 6.3 rpg) are still doing all they can to fill the void left by Brandon Ashley (11.5 ppg, 5.8 rpg) who has been watching from the sidelines after having surgery performed on his right foot last month. San Diego State was one of the top defensive teams in the nation, but of the remaining squads left in the tournament that title belongs to Florida (57.8 ppg), although Arizona (58.4 ppg) isnt far off the pace.
